What Maketh a Geek?

Wednesday, May 18th, 2011

Which category do you fall into? Geek, nerd, dweeb or dork? To the unassuming regular person these are all part of the same classification for a person with a strong interest and enthusiasm for something. Like coding computers. Or studying rocks. Or keeping 10 Tamigotchi’s alive for as long as possible to beat the World Record. So which of these categories do you fall into?

Still not sure? To be honest, some of us IWOOTers didn’t feel compelled to fall into any of those categories, yet still felt there was something geeky about us. Then we discovered the 15 signs you’re a geek and realised we definitely were (especially with point no. 7 & 8). How many of these apply to you?

1. You have tried to enter your password on the microwave.
2. You have a list of 15 phone numbers to reach your family of just three.
3. You start tilting your head sideways to smile : )
4. You wake up at 2am to go to the bathroom and check your E-mail on your way back to bed.
5. You turn off your computer and get this awful feeling, as if you just pulled the plug on a loved one.
6. You can chat several times a day with a stranger from South Africa, but you haven’t spoken with your next door neighbour yet this year.
7. Your reason for not staying in touch with family is that they do not have e-mail addresses.
8. The concept of using real money, instead of credit or debit, to make a purchase is foreign to you.
9. Your daughter sells Charity Cookies via her own web site.
10. You call your son’s mobile phone to let him know it’s time to eat. He emails you back from his bedroom, “What’s for dinner?”
11. Your idea of being organised is multiple-coloured Post-it notes.
12. You haven’t played solitaire with real cards in years
13. You e-mail the person who works at the desk next to you.
14. You’ve sat at the same desk for four years and worked for three different companies.
15. You pull up in your own driveway and use your cell phone to see if anyone is home.

If you’re reading this and nodding then congratulations you are officially GEEK!!

Geek Pride Day UK – 25th May 2011

Monday, May 16th, 2011

A ‘Geek’ – (noun slang)

Nerd, Dweeb, Dork, Spod and Genius….? However you disguise it ‘Geek’ is mainstream!

Iwantoneofthose.com is celebrating the phenomenal rise of Geek Chic as we embrace Geek Pride Day by outing the inner geek in all of us.

This year we intend to bring the party to the shores of the UK and show it is good to be a geek – what’s more we are making it as easy as e = mc2 to take part!

What is Geek Pride Day?

In 1998 a guy named Tim McEachern started “The Geek Pride Festival” in Albany, New York.

Geek Pride Day is an initiative which claims the right of every person to be a nerd or a geek.

It has been celebrated on May 25th since 2006, the date of the premiere of the first Star Wars movie in 1977.

Geek Pride Day also shares the same day as two other science-fiction fan days – Towel Day, for fans of the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy Trilogy by Douglas Adams, and the Glorious 25th of May, for fans of Terry Pratchett’s Discworld.

Why we believe the UK should celebrate Geek Pride Day

Iwantoneofthose.com is renowned for being the UK’s leading website for a wide selection of cool stuff including gadgets, gifts, boys toys and all sorts of fabulous goodies.

However when it comes down to it we’re proud to admit that the Iwantoneofthose.com team are a motley crew of geeks, nerds and fanboys / girls who love our tech, sci-fi and all things clever.

Us geeks are a diverse bunch with one common quality; passion, and we believe that it’s about time that the UK started celebrating and embracing Geek Pride.

How are we going to celebrate Geek Pride Day UK – May 25th 2011

We want to help make Geek Pride Day an institution in the UK over the next few years, starting in 2011.

Over the course of the next ten days we’re going to run social competitions and giveaways, talk to some interesting ‘uber-geeks’ , try to understand a bit more what you think being a geek actually means to you, run some great site offers and hopefully have some fun.

So keep an eye on Iwantoneofthose.com, our blog, Twitter and Facebook pages over the next few days and get ready to celebrate Geek Pride Day on May 25th.

Don’t forget to join in the conversation on Twitter: #geekprideuk

P.S.
If  you’ve any ideas or suggestions on how we should support  and promote Geek Pride Day in the UK on May 25th please mail  Daniella.graves@thehutgroup.com.

Review of the Month Winner for April

Wednesday, May 11th, 2011

We’ve had a tonne load of reviews for the products you rate the best (or if you’ve been honest, the not so good) this month and as usual we’ve read through them all and selected one lucky winner. Our thanks go to GarryBacon who produced this thorough review of the ZAGGmate iPad Case & Keyboard and walks away with £100 of IWOOT vouchers. Not bad for stringing a few sentences together.

Practicality, Simplicity and Ingenious!

Those three words sum up this product. It’s Practical because you can get the Apple Keyboard Dock but you have to carry that around additionally and it’s bulky. This is a keyboard and case. The keyboard is bluetooth so you can have the orientation set to how you want it. It’s simple to pair, use and pack away, my nan can do it! It’s just ingenious in the way everything fits together to form what is effectively a very strong protector for the front of the iPad. Another thing is it’s cheap! A bluetooth keyboard and a good case costs more than this and with this your getting a case and keyboard that are made for each other. The design is so nice because it’s the exact same aluminium they use to make the iPad. If you get this case you will be as happy and as proud to own one as I am. I would really recommend this to anyone and everyone!”

This could be you next month, so do keep reviewing your purchases – you could win big (£100 to be exact)!

Nintendo 3DS Arrives at IWOOT

Friday, January 21st, 2011

Well, with this being one of the most anticipated gaming console releases of recent times, we thought we’d better get in on the act and start stocking the Nintendo 3DS – and boy are we excited to be doing so!

As you’re probably aware, the 3DS had a whopping great launch event in Amsterdam the other day (get all the info here), at which the release date of March 25th was announced. You can already pre-order yours over at IWOOT by clicking here (ooh, two colours!).  There’s a fantastic range of games already in the pipeline for the 3DS as well, including a Metal Gear Solid title (will it ever beat this moment?) and Pro Evo Soccer as well.

Most exciting, though, are the advances made with all the extras. Three cameras allow you to take 3D pictures, the StreetPass function allows you to exchange data with other players as you walk past them, and with the augmented reality feature you can watch your 3D games spring into life in front of your eyes. In short, it’s rather excellent and we can’t wait to get our mitts on one. Can’t even believe we’re saying this – it might be even more exciting than zombies and RC helicopters combined. Yikes!

On a side-note, look at this horrendous trailer for the 3DS. Thank goodness they haven’t made getting burned alive a major part of the PR campaign.

Some customer photos…

Friday, January 14th, 2011

Now that Christmas is done and dusted (though the streets still seem to be littered with pine needles from discarded trees), we’ve had a couple of photos sent to us of people enjoying their IWOOT Christmas presents. This is exactly the sort of thing we love to receive at IWOOT, and heck, it makes us feel all warm inside, so we thought we’d share it with you.

First up, here’s an alternative use of one of our boxes, courtesy of @weeniebeenie on Twitter:

And this one from @harrietjeckells, who bought one of our Sumo Suits for her little brother:

Happiest boy ever? Probably. Furthermore, here’s one of his dad:

Do feel free to tweet us your snaps of IWOOT stuff in use, even if it’s just a cat in one of our boxes. Actually, make that particularly if it’s just a cat in one of our boxes.

Worst Christmas Present Winner

Thursday, January 6th, 2011

As soon as Santa had delivered his last gift (feel sorry for whoever got that), we launched a competition to find the worst Christmas present given this year, and boy did we have some strong contenders. Of course, we had to select one winner from the photos submitted, and it turned out to be a pretty unanimous decision here at IWOOT Towers.

So without any more dilly-dallying, we unveil the winner:

We’re sure you’ll agree that this is literally unbelievable. A onesie. With elephants on. Pink elephants. Poor old Samantha Coles. She could at least try and look grateful. Congratulations and £100 of IWOOT vouchers are winging their way to her as we speak!

Thanks to everyone who entered the competition, we had a right old laugh wondering who on earth would think giving Sellotape as a Christmas present was a good idea.

Cycling the 6: Dr. Steven Fabes continues…

Thursday, November 11th, 2010

After some serious setbacks, the intrepid (and possibly insane) Dr. Steve Fabes’ mission to cycle across 6 continents continues.

Make sure you have a read of his latest blog post, it’s honestly quite incredible and a real measure of what the good doctor is putting himself through for the sake of his charity. Let’s put it this way – theft, fever, fat tourists and ukuleles. Wowsers!

To see how the whole thing kicked off, visit Steve’s blog – then have a look at this one we did earlier that explains why we’re sponsoring him.

The IWOOT Pumpkin Carving Competition 2010

Monday, October 25th, 2010

You may remember that last year we had a very successful pumpkin carving competition to celebrate Halloween. Well, shockingly, we’ve decided not to fix something that ain’t broke and do the exact same thing again! We were so impressed by the standard last year that we’re dead excited (Halloween joke-ette) to see what you’ll come up with this time around.

But what are you carving for, exactly? Whoever carves the best pumpkin will be the lucky winner of one of our superb Wand Remote Controls, the perfect thing to make your living room that little bit more magical. Use it to control anything that has a remote control – lights, the telly, your iPod dock, whatever you’ve got.

Here’s a picture of last year’s winner to get you in the mood and give you inspiration:

You can see some more of our favourites from last year by clicking here. We want the most creative, elaborate, scary or interesting pumpkin sculpture you can possibly craft – the standard of last year’s competition was extremely high, and we want to beat it. Once you’ve carved your pumpkin, photograph it and post it on our Facebook page, here.

So get a pumpkin and get carving to be in with a chance of winning! You’ve got until midday on Monday November 1st to post your photographs on our Faceook page.
