Zumba: The Review

Tuesday, January 17th, 2012

When the rectangular white box arrived I was a happy chappy, I never get anything in the post and when I do its usually speeding fines or credit card bills. I had a huge cartoon bubble hovering above my head with an image of my tight thighs, bulging biceps and toned abs. Perfect.

Although my stomach rumbled I quickly opened the box like a kid at Christmas, inside was a total body transformation guide. Right I said resolutely, this will be my Bible for the next two weeks; I will eat, sleep and think Zumba. To get me started the guide contained training tips, a stretch guide, a fat loss programme and much more. The pack also contained 4 DVDs and two big green batons that could have been mistaken for a couple of grown-up baby rattles.

The 4 DVDs were enticingly labelled……

  • Basics and 20 minute express (20 mins..no sweat..well actually hopefully so!)
  • Cardio party (I love a party….party on!)
  • Sculpt and tone (my body is a temple, my body is a temple)
  • Live! And flat abs (Flat Abs? I want rippling Abs)

The packs not only came in English but also Dutch, Spanish, French and Italian. I quickly chose the English version, languages was never my forte, let’s hope Zumba is!

So let’s get to it….Pre party process included making sure that my flat was empty, I closed all the curtains and dimmed the lights, I wasn’t sure how bad I was going to be at this and I didn’t want any witnesses (however I did phone my Mum and ask her to call and check on me in an hour or 2! I’ve not done that since college)

Basics and 20 minute express

I was wondering how on earth I was going to cope with the quick moves and the fast music but the DVD took me through each step and the basics of them, very slowly. Some might argue too slowly but at least it was thorough, I was confident within minutes. The steps were simplified and really easy to manage. I can now declare I’m an expert in the ‘booty circle’ and the ‘diamond step.’

The DVD started with an introduction to the creator of Zumba which gave it a great personal touch. The presenters went through the routines enough times to get the hang of them. There were also handy hints throughout the DVD such as, ‘the higher your hands, the more calories you burn’ which I considered helpful and informative. I was aware how ridiculous I looked, I hadn’t taken dance lessons since I was 10 years old but I didn’t care, I was enjoying myself.

The steps were introduced which helped associate moves with their name. Marching between steps was encouraged which was a great way to keep moving whilst slowing the heart rate- at some points it was needed!

The 20 minute DVD was broken down into four sets of five minutes and concentrated on different dances which gave the workout variety and kept it interesting.

Nintendo 3DS Arrives at IWOOT

Friday, January 21st, 2011

Well, with this being one of the most anticipated gaming console releases of recent times, we thought we’d better get in on the act and start stocking the Nintendo 3DS – and boy are we excited to be doing so!

As you’re probably aware, the 3DS had a whopping great launch event in Amsterdam the other day (get all the info here), at which the release date of March 25th was announced. You can already pre-order yours over at IWOOT by clicking here (ooh, two colours!).  There’s a fantastic range of games already in the pipeline for the 3DS as well, including a Metal Gear Solid title (will it ever beat this moment?) and Pro Evo Soccer as well.

Most exciting, though, are the advances made with all the extras. Three cameras allow you to take 3D pictures, the StreetPass function allows you to exchange data with other players as you walk past them, and with the augmented reality feature you can watch your 3D games spring into life in front of your eyes. In short, it’s rather excellent and we can’t wait to get our mitts on one. Can’t even believe we’re saying this – it might be even more exciting than zombies and RC helicopters combined. Yikes!

On a side-note, look at this horrendous trailer for the 3DS. Thank goodness they haven’t made getting burned alive a major part of the PR campaign.

Star Wars Augmented Reality on iPhone

Thursday, November 4th, 2010

It was only a matter of time before some addled nerd managed to wrangle TIE fighters into the New York skyline, and boy howdy have they done a good job of it:

Basically, this is from a forthcoming game entitled ‘Star Wars Arcade: Falcon Gunner’ that will be playable on iPhone, using its camera lens to form the backdrop for your intergalactic dogfight. Clever, that. If the New York skyline in the video isn’t cool enough for you, then imagine how it’d look if you aimed your lens at the night sky, or in a forest. Or, y’know, in the bath or something. I don’t know, use your imagination.

Via The Wall. Which is nice, obviously.

Mario Kart Street Graffiti

Friday, August 27th, 2010

Mario Kart is officially the funnest thing ever (except working at IWOOT, obviously), so we’re always on the lookout for developments in the world of banana skins, green shells and reckless driving. A recent news bulletin shows perhaps the most mysterious incident of Mario Kart invading real life – a cycle path in Portland, Oregon has had some interesting graffiti drawn on it:

Thankfully, the banana skins don’t cause you to spin out and fall off Rainbow Road. While we’re on the subject, there are some seriously dangerous Mario Kart enthusiasts out there too:

Don’t try this at home, obviously.

Attention All Megadrive Fans!

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

I was scouring the interwebs this morning, and boy was I excited when I stumbled upon www.playsega.com. All of my favourite old school mega drive games (barring Mortal Kombat), available to play on my PC!  So, as one does, I hurriedly got started on a free one day trial (of course free forever clearly just isn’t an option in today’s penny squeezing world) and hey presto – joy of all geek  joy – I eagerly waited for Sonic 3 to load. Alas that is where my journey ended. I tried Firefox, Safari and Google Chrome (stop right there – don’t even dare recommend IE).  My failure though, could be related to not having one of the million plug-ins required in the PC world. Don’t let my bad experience put you off however, with firewalls, company security policies etc, it is probably just me and my Vista 64bit Designer-Hating machine. Give it a go, and please, oh please, let me know how you find it!

Amazing Video of Pixels Taking Over the World

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

Remember Donkey Kong, Tetris, Space Invaders and Frogger? You’re safe from them now, aren’t you? Because they’re locked up behind your console screen where they can’t hurt you.

Well, apparently that’s no longer true:

This incredible video features, as you can see, all your favourite retro pixelated characters gradually taking over the world by bashing it up with Tetris blocks and stuff. Hands up anyone who didn’t get a genuine pang of fear when the Pong bats turned up… mental. Anyway, this slice of anarchic fun comes courtesy of a chap called Patrick Jean, about whom there seems to be very little information apart from this breakthrough piece.

We hope to see more from him in the future. Something about pixelated characters taking over the universe will do.

Stylophone Plays Zelda Themes

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

It seems that our humble buzz-toned friend the Stylophone is high in demand with geek musicians everywhere. After the original product video and last week’s epic demonstration of how the Stylophone Beatbox can be used in dance tracks, we bring you this truly insane medley of tunes from the popular Zelda Nintendo games played on various instruments including our very own cheesy 70s classic with Beatbox upgrades.

Sit back and marvel at the wonder of someone with too much time on their hands a natural, incredible talent:

What are the best Video Game movies?

Monday, January 18th, 2010

The Guardian reports that the film version of popular gaming franchise Metal Gear Solid was scrapped due to the gulf of influence between the gaming and movie worlds. This is fair enough – what complements one medium is diametrically opposed to the what complements the other. Though they are both designed to be immersive, even participatory, the elements that make them so are very far removed. Movies encourage passive involvement, while games need you to be engaged more fully to be successful – perhaps a reason why so many movie adaptations of video games are so ridiculously high-octane. They’re just exhausting.

Here are a few choice videogame movies that, for possibly all the wrong reasons, give us itchy fingers:

Super Mario Bros: Bob Hoskins. What happened?

Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Seriously, why did anyone think this was a good idea?

Mortal Kombat: How come there were no Babalities in this one?

So, if those don’t do it for you, let us know which ones you prefer. Videos always help.

Mario Kart Nostalgia

Friday, December 11th, 2009

We’ve had something rather special arrive at IWOOT Towers – samples of some new remote control Mario Karts. That’s right. Mario Kart, but in real life. And miniature. It’s difficult to express quite how cool this is if you weren’t beguiled by the ludicrously addictive early Mario Kart games, but for those among you that were, you’ll know that this is Super Mario-mazing. Rather than showing you pictures and silly videos of us larking about with them (no doubt that’ll happen in the new year, stay tuned), I thought we should stop to consider the original game itself.

I’ve spent a good portion of this afternoon racking my brains about the original SNES version (bought in Currys for my older brother and I as a Christmas present in about 1994, good times…), and am now a nostalgia-ridden mess of pixelated pining. By far my favourite thing about this game was the solitary time trial mode. I really must have been a lonesome child. Hours were whiled away, trying desperately to get a sub-20 second lap time on Rainbow Road, a sub-12 second lap time on Mario Circuit 1… ah, memories.

Anyway, a little bit of trawling has yielded some interesting results – I was never as good as this:

Nor this:

Perhaps even more amazingly, there are several websites dedicated to the current (well, current for a game released in 1992) world record holders and leader boards. An amazing subculture. I feel like Louis Theroux. Have a look here to see who’s currently the niftiest with Donkey Kong around the ghost levels (I was always a Koopa man myself…).

Apologies for the terrible nerd-out, it is a Friday after all.
